Russiagate 2.0 loading...
British Intelligence would like you to believe that Russia spent just $30 million to exact revenge for Operation Cyclone.
Donald Trump’s first term as POTUS was hamstrung by Russiagate, kicked off by the eponymous dossier authored by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele. That and the Trump-Ukraine scandal constrained him with regard to Russia and Ukraine.
With Trump all set to assume office again, it appears that British Intelligence, through *ahem* friendly organisations, is looking to make it politically expensive for the incoming Trump administration to withdraw support from Ukraine.
The Insider claims that the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence, gave the Taliban $30 million to redirect their efforts from Afghan nationals to American soldiers. This was payback for the thousands of tons of weapons and billions of dollars in cash and gold that the CIA gave to Afghan mujahideen during Operation Cyclone. This makes the GRU remarkably more efficient compared to the CIA. Perhaps Langley should outsource some of its operations to the Russians.
Operation Cyclone was the code name for the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) program to arm and finance the Afghan mujahideen in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1992, prior to and during the military intervention by the USSR in support of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
Originally claimed by The New York Times in 2020, the story has been picked up after a gap of four long years during which it was conveniently memory-holed. What makes it even more suspect is that it has been picked up by theinsider.ru, a Bellingcat derivative (Christo Grozev was the lead Russia investigator with Bellingcat).
“I don’t want to be too dramatic, but we love [Bellingcat].”
—Marc Polymeropoulos, former Deputy Chief of Operations, CIA.
Will this attempt successfully hamstring Trump 2.0? Only time will tell. But it will be fun to watch. You can read the Insider article here.
